A Basic Bike is one that is intended for paved surfaces such as roads and bike trails. If you intend to pedal along on smooth, flat surfaces, a basic bike is all you’ll really need. You may choose an electric option if you want pedal-assist in uphill or long-distance situations. There is a significant up-charge for e-bikes, however.

Multi-surface bikes feature components that improve handling when a rider deviates from smooth pavement to road conditions that are less than stellar.  Also known as Gravel Bikes, they’re great for riders who like to be free to travel light trails when the mood strikes.
